Situated in the heart of the Vallée d'Aulps, the village of Saint Jean d'Aulps has inherited its name from the old French word for "alpage", meaning high mountain pasture.

With the growth of the skiing industry, Saint Jean d'Aulps has become an important winter sports destination. The ski resort has an excellent snow record, and is an integral part of the Portes du Soleil.
